At Lincoln Orthodontics we specialise in orthodontics, which is the speciality of straightening teeth. We concentrate on all aspects of braces from lingual braces, invisible braces, tooth coloured braces to silver braces. We do not carry out any general dentistry or other specialist dental work. We do, however, liaise with your general dentist and, as necessary, other specialist colleagues for their expertise to ensure the best outcome for our patients.
By law, any dentist can carry out specialist treatment without a formal qualification, as long as they feel competent to do so. Their only qualification may be that they are experienced in doing orthodontic work, but without formal training. Any dentist can be certified by brace manufacturers to use their braces after attending a weekend course. This does not train them in the subject of orthodontics, which takes three years of full-time postgraduate training in a Dental Teaching Hospital.
If you are considering orthodontic treatment, we recommend you ask your clinician the following questions before agreeing to treatment:
- Review the specialist qualifications of the clinician (and staff) in carrying out specialist work.
- Were their qualifications awarded by a recognised professional body, or were they awarded after a weekend course?
- What is their clinical experience in the number and variety of cases they accept for treatment?
