Retainers

Enjoy your straightened smile for life

The most important step of your orthodontic treatment actually occurs after we reveal your brand new smile! That’s because without a retainer, you can lose all the progress you’ve worked so hard for. Not to worry, we’ll provide you with a custom retainer as part of your treatment.

Types of retainers

At Lincoln Orthodontics we offer two types of custom retainers: fixed and removable retainers.

Fixed retainers are thin metal wires that are bonded to the back of your teeth. Because the retainer is fixed, you won’t have to worry about losing it, but you should take extra care to keep it clean so that plaque doesn’t build up around your retainer.

Removable retainers look a bit like Invisalign® clear aligners. They slot over your smile like a sports mouthguard and can be taken out for meals and regular brushing and flossing. These removable retainers are completely clear for the ultimate discretion.

How to care for your retainer

To ensure your results (and your retainer) are long-lived, here are our top tips for retainer care:

  • Always wear your retainer as instructed by your Specialist Orthodontist.
  • When you take your retainer out, put it in its retainer case, not in a napkin (you don’t want to throw it out by accident!)
  • Remove your retainer when eating, drinking or swimming.
  • Gently clean your retainer once a day with a toothbrush and toothpaste.
  • Keep your retainer away from high heat.
  • Also keep your retainer away from pets!
  • Contact us immediately if you need a retainer replacement for any reason.
