Protecting your child’s oral health
Give their teeth the start in life they deserve.
At Lincoln Orthodontics, we specialise in adult orthodontic treatment. But that doesn’t mean we don’t treat children. In fact, as a practice we strongly recommend parents bring their children in for an orthodontic consultation around the age of nine. This is because, the earlier we are able to assess your child’s teeth, the earlier we are able to identify any possible orthodontic problems they may be susceptible to later in life.
What happens during this consultation?
When you bring your child in for his or her orthodontic assessment, the first thing we’ll ensure is that both you and your child are at ease. We know how scary the dentist’s chair can be, which is why we aim to create a warm, welcoming environment for each of our patients.
We’ll talk to your child about his or her oral hygiene routine and then take a look at the development of their teeth, jaws and overall facial profile. We’re looking for any abnormalities which could indicate they’ll need treatment in the future.
Your child won’t always need to begin treatment immediately, but this assessment will let you plan for possible treatment in advance. Ultimately, the purpose of this assessment is to reduce the risk of your child needing major orthodontic treatment later.
If your child’s overall wellbeing is compromised by their oral health, they could receive treatment under the NHS. Children under the age of 18 may be eligible for treatment if their orthodontic needs are deemed serious enough. These will be assessed by our orthodontist and measured on the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN).
